🧶 What You’ll Need
- 1 × 100g ball of Knitsilk Recycled Sari Silk (approx. 50 yards)
- 8mm knitting needles (US 11) — or 9mm / US 13 for bulkier yarn
- Tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends
- Scissors
- Optional: measuring tape

🌈 Before You Begin: Embrace the Yarn
Recycled sari silk is intentionally irregular. You may encounter:
- Changes in thickness throughout the yarn
- Loose fibres and fringe from the original sari fabric
- Unexpected colour transitions and joins
- Different textile textures in a single ball
These are characteristics of the material — not mistakes. Do not try to make the yarn perfectly uniform. Let the variations create the design. Every irregularity is a piece of sari history.
🧵 The Pattern — Step by Step
Leave a 6–8 inch tail. Make a slip knot and place it on the needle. Keep the loop comfortable rather than tight — you’ll need this tail later for seaming.
Use a long-tail cast-on or any cast-on you are comfortable with. Keep the stitches moderately loose — sari silk can be dense and a tight cast-on will make it difficult to knit the first row.
Tip: If your yarn feels especially thick or firm, switch up a needle size to 9mm / US 13 before casting on.
This pattern uses the simplest stitch in knitting: garter stitch. Knit every stitch on every row, right side and wrong side alike.
Row 2: Knit 14.
Repeat Rows 1–2 until piece measures 19–21 inches.
That’s the entire stitch pattern. Let the yarn do the rest.
Continue knitting until your strip measures approximately 19–21 inches from cast-on edge to needle. Because recycled sari silk varies significantly in thickness, measuring the actual fabric is always more reliable than counting rows.
- Snug fit: Aim for approx. 18–19 inches
- Relaxed fit: Aim for approx. 20–21 inches
Tip: Try the strip around your head before binding off — it should fit comfortably with a slight stretch.

Bind off all stitches loosely. A tight bind-off will pull in the edge and make seaming more difficult. Leave an 8–10 inch tail — you’ll use this to seam the headband closed.
Bring the two short ends together. Thread your tapestry needle with the tail yarn and stitch the ends together using a simple mattress stitch or whip stitch. Weave in both tails securely.
Before joining the ends, make one half twist in the strip. Sew the twisted ends together. This creates the elegant twisted-front style shown in the pattern image — a boutique finish that takes less than 30 seconds extra.
If the fabric looks uneven after seaming, lightly mist it with water and gently reshape it flat on a clean towel. Do not stretch aggressively. Allow to dry completely before wearing.

🎨 Three Easy Variations
| Style | Cast On | Width | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic | 14 stitches | 3–4 inches | Everyday wear, all hair types |
| Wide | 18 stitches | 4–5 inches | Bold, statement look |
| Narrow | 10 stitches | 2–3 inches | Slim fashion band, festival style |
🔧 Troubleshooting
- Yarn feels very stiff or hard to knit through: Go up a needle size to 9mm / US 13. This is normal with denser sari silk balls.
- Yarn is very thin in some sections: This is a characteristic of recycled material. Simply continue knitting — the variation adds texture.
- The yarn keeps splitting: Work more slowly and insert the needle tip carefully into the centre of each stitch.
- My headband is too short / too long: Recycled sari silk varies significantly. Always measure your actual knitted strip against your head before binding off.
- The seam is visible: Use matching yarn tones from the ball tail and tighten the seam stitches gently. The colourful nature of sari silk helps disguise seams naturally.
🌟 Leftover Yarn Ideas
With approximately 5–20 yards remaining after your headband, try:
- Small knitted flower: Cast on 20 stitches, knit 4 rows, bind off, and coil into a flower shape. Secure with a few stitches.
- Tassel: Wind yarn 15–20 times around a piece of cardboard, tie at the top, cut at the bottom.
- Mug cozy: Cast on 8 stitches, knit until it fits around your favourite mug, seam the ends.
- Mini pouch: Cast on 12 stitches, knit 20 rows, fold in half, seam the sides.
- Decorative bow: Knit a small strip, tie in the centre, attach to a hair clip or gift wrap.

♻️ From Sari to Second Life — The Story Behind the Yarn
Knitsilk Recycled Sari Silk begins as the sarees of India — vibrant, ceremonial, storied garments that have been worn, celebrated, and passed down through generations. When a saree reaches the end of its wearable life, Knitsilk’s artisans reclaim the fabric, strip it into fibres, and spin it into yarn.
The result is a material that carries colour, history, and character that no dye pot can replicate. Each 100g ball contains fibres from multiple sarees — which is why every ball is different, and why every headband made from it is a genuinely one-of-a-kind object.
