Each ribbon is approximately 1 inch wide with naturally frayed edges and hand-stitched construction. Colour changes, soft texture and handmade variation mean every bracelet is completely unique. This is Knitsilk Free Tutorial No.1 in our DIY ribbon and silk series.

📚 The Free Tutorial — Step by Step

Step 1 — Measure 📏
  1. Wrap a measuring tape around your wrist comfortably — not tight, not loose.
  2. Add approximately 2–4 inches for braiding take-up, finishing and the closure.
  3. Add more if you want a tie bracelet or double-wrap style.
  4. Cut three equal ribbon lengths.
Step 2 — Prepare ✂️
  1. Align the three ribbon ends evenly.
  2. Secure them with a clip, temporary knot, or a few small stitches at the top.
  3. Anchor the secured end to a table edge, clipboard or cushion with a clip or safety pin.
  4. Trim only excessively loose fibres — the naturally frayed edge is part of the ribbon’s character.
Step 3 — Braid 🌈
Separate the three ribbons: Left — Centre — Right.

1. Move the Left strip over the Centre strip. (Left is now Centre.)
2. Move the Right strip over the new Centre strip. (Right is now Centre.)
3. Repeat: Left over Centre, then Right over Centre.
4. Continue until the braid reaches your desired bracelet length.

Keep the braid relaxed. Excessive tension can shorten the bracelet and stress the ribbon fibres.
Step 4 — Control the Look 💜
  • Keep the strips flat for a wider, softer, ribbon-effect braid.
  • Allow them to roll and twist naturally for a cord-like appearance.
  • Let the ribbon’s natural colour changes and texture remain visible — they are the design.
Step 5 — Check the Fit 📿
  • Place the braid loosely around your wrist before finishing.
  • Too short? Loosen the braid gently or restart with longer ribbon strips.
  • Too loose? Gently tighten the braid evenly along its length.
  • Allow a little ease — the bracelet should slide on comfortably.
Step 6 — Finish & Close ✂️✨
  1. Align the three ribbon ends evenly.
  2. Secure them with several small stitches using strong thread. Pass through multiple times.
  3. Trim only excess loose fibres — leave the natural frayed character.
  4. Finish with your chosen closure:
Closure Style How To
Tie bracelet Leave long tails at both ends and tie around the wrist
Button & loop Sew button firmly to one end; make a thread loop at the other
Clasp Attach ribbon ends with ribbon ends / crimp ends and a lobster clasp
Tassel ends Leave the ends loose and slightly frayed for a boho tassel effect

Always test the closure gently before wearing.

🎨 Design Ideas to Try

💜 Contrast Mix
Combine one light ribbon with two dark ribbons for a dramatic colour-block effect
💞 Double Wrap
Use longer strips (36–40 in) and wrap the finished braid twice around the wrist
🏧 Bead Accent
Thread a bead onto the centre ribbon before braiding for a focal point
✨ Charm Detail
Attach a small charm at the centre or at one end after finishing
🌿 Tassel Ends
Leave loose ends long and slightly frayed for a boho tassel bracelet look

🔧 Troubleshooting

  • Bracelet too short: Loosen the braid evenly, or restart with longer ribbon strips
  • Excessive fraying: Secure the ends with hand stitches before trimming; avoid over-cutting
  • Uneven braid: Slow down and maintain similar tension with each pass
  • Ribbon separating at ends: Reinforce both the starting and finishing ends with extra stitches
  • Weak closure: Use multiple stitching passes and test the closure before wearing

🚿 Care Instructions

  • 💜 Handle gently; keep away from rough surfaces and snags
  • 💧 Spot-clean only with cool water and mild detergent when necessary
  • ❌ Do not wring, twist aggressively, iron or expose to high heat
  • 🌥️ Dry naturally; lay flat if possible
  • 🔍 Inspect stitching and closures regularly; reinforce if needed
  • ⚠️ Remove bracelet during activities where it may catch or pull
  • 👶 Small beads and charms are not suitable for unsupervised young children
