🧶 You've invested in beautiful silk yarn. You've done the burn test (Part 1 — it passed!). Now comes the question nobody warns you about: where on earth do you put it? Silk is not wool. It does not forgive neglect. But treat it right, and it will reward you with decades of lustrous, gorgeous crafting. Here's everything you need to know.
🤔 Why Silk Needs Special Storage
Silk is a protein fibre — just like your hair. And just like your hair, it responds to its environment. Too much light fades it. Too much moisture encourages mildew. Too little moisture makes it brittle. Moths love it. Dust dulls it. The good news? None of this is hard to prevent once you know what you're doing.
☀️ Rule #1 — Keep It Away From Direct Light
Silk is photosensitive. UV light — from sunlight and even strong artificial lighting — breaks down the protein structure of silk fibres over time, causing yellowing, fading, and weakening. This is especially important for undyed or light-coloured silks.
Store silk in a drawer, box, or opaque bag away from windows. If you display your yarn stash, keep silk away from the sunny shelf.

💧 Rule #2 — Control Moisture (But Don't Dry It Out)

🔄 Long-Term Storage Tips
- Re-skein loosely — don't store silk wound tightly; it can distort the fibres
- Label everything — fibre content, weight, yardage, and purchase date
- Check every 3–6 months — inspect for any signs of moths, moisture, or yellowing
- Air it out occasionally — a few hours in a cool, shaded room does wonders
