How to Crochet a Sari Silk Pumpkin
Turn colourful KnitSilk recycled sari silk yarn into a one-of-a-kind Halloween pumpkin. The textured yarn does the decorating for you: every pumpkin becomes a little different.
Estimated yarn for one small pumpkin.
Suggested starting hook, adjust after sampling.
Estimated decorative size, not a fixed measurement.
Time, yarn use, hook size and dimensions are estimates. Actual results depend on yarn thickness, tension and construction.
Materials you’ll need
Choose multicolour recycled sari silk yarn for a richly textured pumpkin. Its variation means exact colour repeats are not expected. Inspect joins and weak sections before starting.
- Multicolour recycled sari silk yarn, approximately 20–30 g as an initial estimate.
- 5–6 mm crochet hook as a starting point.
- Polyester fiberfill stuffing.
- Tapestry needle.
- Scissors and a stitch marker.
- Optional clean twig, contrasting yarn or ribbon.
Use a hook that creates firm fabric without obvious gaps. Feel for stitch tops when the yarn’s texture makes them difficult to see, and count carefully. Do not force a thicker strand through a small hook size simply to meet the estimate.
Crochet terminology, US terms
This EU edition uses US crochet terminology. US single crochet is called double crochet in UK terminology; do not switch conventions midway through the pattern.
| Abbreviation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| MR | Magic ring |
| ch | Chain |
| sc | Single crochet |
| inc | 2 single crochet stitches in the same stitch |
| dec | Single crochet 2 stitches together, sc2tog |
| st(s) | Stitch(es) |
For sc, insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through both loops. For sc2tog, insert into the first stitch and pull up a loop; insert into the next stitch and pull up another loop; yarn over and pull through all three loops. An increase adds one stitch; a decrease removes one.
Round-by-round pattern
Work in continuous rounds, marking the first stitch of every round. Move the marker as each new round begins. Do not add joining slip stitches or turning chains to these counts.
| Round | Instructions | Total stitches |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6 sc in MR | 6 |
| 2 | inc in every stitch | 12 |
| 3 | (1 sc, inc) repeat 6 times | 18 |
| 4 | (2 sc, inc) repeat 6 times | 24 |
| 5 | (3 sc, inc) repeat 6 times | 30 |
| 6–11 | sc in every stitch | 30 each round |
| 12 | (3 sc, dec) repeat 6 times | 24 |
| 13 | (2 sc, dec) repeat 6 times | 18 |
| 14 | (1 sc, dec) repeat 6 times | 12 |
| 15 | dec 6 times | 6 |
For a shorter pumpkin, work fewer even rounds. For a taller pumpkin, add 1–2 even rounds before decreasing. Keep the increase and decrease counts unchanged, and reassess yarn use and dimensions.
Step-by-step tutorial
Open each section as you work. The written pattern provides the exact stitch counts; the infographic below is a visual overview.
1. Make the magic ring
Form an adjustable loop, draw up a working loop and secure it with a chain that does not count as a stitch. Work 6 sc into the ring. Pull the starting tail gently to close the centre and mark the first stitch. Check that the ring stays secure without pulling so hard that the yarn breaks.
2. Increase to 30 stitches
Follow rounds 2–5: increase to 12, then 18, 24 and 30 stitches. Check the count at the end of every round before continuing. Each increase is 2 sc in one stitch; repeat the bracketed sequence six times.
3. Build the sides
Work rounds 6–11 without increasing, keeping 30 sc in each round. The circle will develop into a small cup. Keep the marker moving and the stitches firm enough to contain stuffing.
4. Start decreasing and stuff
Follow rounds 12–14 to reach 24, 18 and 12 stitches. Add polyester fiberfill before the opening becomes too small. Distribute it evenly, leaving enough give to form ridges without forcing stuffing through the stitches.
5. Close the top
Complete round 15 with 6 decreases. Leave a generous tail, cut the yarn and draw it through the working loop. Thread a tapestry needle and pass through the remaining stitch loops, then draw the opening closed gently. Secure the closure before shaping.
6. Create the pumpkin ridges
Pass a strong yarn tail through the centre and around the outside. Repeat at evenly spaced positions for approximately 5–6 segments. Pull gently and adjust gradually rather than tightening each pass abruptly. Use a strong matching yarn if the sari silk strand breaks under tension. Secure the shaping yarn and hide its end.
7. Add a stem
Securely attach a clean, dry twig with no sharp edges, checking that it cannot easily detach. Alternatively, crochet a short chain, single crochet back along it, then sew the strip into a stem shape and attach it securely. Adjust the chain length to your pumpkin; no fixed stem dimension is specified.
8. Add a leaf and finish
Optionally attach a separately crocheted leaf using a suitable leaf pattern and add a chain tendril. These are embellishment ideas, not an additional fixed-count leaf pattern. Secure every attachment, hide ends and adjust the stuffing and segment shape.
Finishing and styling tips
- Let the multicolour texture be the feature.
- Use a contrasting solid-colour stem.
- Make three pumpkins in different heights by varying the even rounds.
- Photograph your actual finished piece beside its original yarn ball using soft side lighting.
Creative ways to use your pumpkin
Group different heights on a tray away from heat.
Add a decorative pumpkin to a wrapped gift.
Pair with battery-operated lanterns, not flames.
Secure attachments and keep out of reach of children and pets.
Make a sample with the exact materials before setting quantities.
Include a note explaining that it is decorative, not a toy.
Frequently asked questions
Is this suitable for beginners?
It is intended to be beginner-friendly if you can make a magic ring, single crochet, increase and decrease. Textured sari silk can make stitches harder to see, so use a marker and check every round’s count. Testing with your exact yarn is not yet confirmed.
How much yarn does one pumpkin use?
Approximately 20–30 g is an initial estimate for a small pumpkin. Yarn thickness, tension, height and embellishments affect consumption. Make a sample before fixing kit quantities.
What hook size should I use?
Start by testing a 5–6 mm hook. Adjust to create firm fabric with no obvious gaps while handling your yarn comfortably. It is not a universal size recommendation for every sari silk yarn.
Can I wash the finished pumpkin?
Follow the yarn, stuffing and attachment instructions together. Test colourfastness on a swatch and do not assume the assembled pumpkin is machine washable. Twigs and other attachments can limit suitable cleaning methods.
Is it a toy for children?
No. This is a decorative pattern, not a children’s toy. Keep small detachable parts, twigs and loose fibres away from young children and pets.
Pattern, safety and care notes
This is a KnitSilk-inspired beginner decorative pattern. Test it with the exact yarn and hook before producing a commercial kit or promising fixed dimensions. Finished size and yarn consumption vary. It is not described as a tested pattern because testing has not been confirmed.
