DIY Wrapped Silk Ribbon Bangle 🧵✨ Free Tutorial No.2
Teilen
🧵 Turn a plain bangle into an elegant textile accessory using just Knitsilk Multicolor Silk Ribbon, a needle and thread. The ribbon’s approximately 1-inch width, naturally frayed edges, hand-stitched construction and continuously changing colours mean every wrapped bangle is a one-of-a-kind piece. No complicated tools, no specialist skills — just 25–45 minutes and a little patience. This is Knitsilk Free Tutorial No.2 in our DIY silk ribbon series.
| Skill Level | Beginner — no prior craft experience needed |
| Time | 25–45 minutes |
| Ribbon Needed | Approx. 1–2 yards (test-wrap before cutting) |
| Finished Result | Wrapped textile bangle with soft, layered appearance |
| Cost | Free tutorial — only materials needed |
🧵 Materials You Need
- Knitsilk Multicolor Silk Ribbon — approx. 1 inch wide, frayed edges, hand-stitched
- Plain rigid bangle or wide bracelet base — smooth, no sharp edges
- Sharp scissors
- Hand-sewing needle and strong thread
- Measuring tape
- Clips or small clamps (to hold ribbon while wrapping)
- Optional: fabric-safe adhesive, beads, charms or decorative stitching
💡 Ribbon Estimate: For a narrow bangle, start with approx. 1 yard. For a wider bangle or heavier overlap, prepare 1.5–2 yards. Do not cut the full length until you have test-wrapped a section — the amount needed changes with bangle circumference, ribbon thickness and overlap amount.

📚 The Free Tutorial — Step by Step
- Choose a smooth, rigid bangle without sharp edges or protruding hardware.
- The base must be strong enough for repeated handling and wrapping.
- A wider base creates a bold statement piece; a narrow base produces a delicate look.
- Plastic, wood and metal bases all work well. Rough or textured bases may cause uneven wrapping.
- Wrap a short test section of ribbon around the bangle to estimate total length needed.
- Add extra for securing the beginning and end (approximately 3–4 extra inches each side).
- Plan for approximately one-third to one-half ribbon overlap per turn, depending on desired coverage.
- Avoid excessive overlap — too much creates bulky, stiff sections.
- Only cut your full ribbon length after the test-wrap.
- Trim only loose, excessive fibres from the starting end — preserve the natural frayed character.
- Fold the starting end inward by approximately 1–2 cm where the ribbon allows.
- Secure it to the inside of the bangle with several small, firm stitches.
- Alternative: apply a very small amount of fabric-safe adhesive to the inside only. Allow it to set fully before wrapping.
2. Wrap it around with consistent overlap each turn.
3. Keep the ribbon relaxed — do not pull it tight or stretch it.
4. Smooth each turn gently with your fingers as you go.
5. Use clips to hold sections while you work if needed.
6. Continue until the base is completely covered.
A slight diagonal wrap creates a dynamic layered pattern. A straight wrap produces a cleaner, more uniform appearance — choose based on your style preference.
- Frayed edges are part of Knitsilk’s handmade character — allow small fibres to remain visible for a relaxed, artisanal appearance.
- If a section becomes excessively loose mid-wrap, secure it with a few discreet stitches from the inside.
- Do not cut away all the fraying — this changes the ribbon’s texture and appearance permanently.
- Stop wrapping on the inside of the bangle.
- Fold the final ribbon end inward where possible.
- Secure with several small, firm stitches in different directions — not one long stitch.
- Trim loose excess fibres carefully — leave natural frayed character.
- Check that no sharp thread ends remain on the inside.
- Gently flex the bangle to check the finish holds before wearing.
Keep embellishments lightweight so the bangle remains comfortable to wear. Ideas:
- A small bead sewn at the centre of the outside
- A charm attached with reinforced stitching
- Decorative cross-stitches along one edge
- A contrasting narrow ribbon strip wrapped over the top
- A small fabric flower pinned or stitched at one point
- A narrow metallic or plain silk accent strip
🎨 6 Design Variations to Try
One ribbon colour family, little overlap — clean and understated
Generous overlap for a richer, more textured surface
Join two ribbon shades at a planned midpoint for a deliberate colour change
Keep frayed edges prominent for a boho, artisanal feel
Wide base + one central decorative detail — bead, charm or flower
Make three bangles in related colour palettes — wear together or separately
🔧 Troubleshooting
- Ribbon slips while wrapping: Use temporary clips and work in short sections at a time
- Surface looks uneven: Unwrap the last few turns and reduce or even out the overlap
- Bangle feels bulky: Use less overlap or switch to a thinner bangle base
- Edges shedding too much: Secure loose areas with small discreet stitches on the inside
- Finishing end comes loose: Reinforce the inside with multiple stitches in different directions
- Adhesive shows through: Use less adhesive and apply it only to the inside surface
🚿 Care Instructions
- 💜 Keep away from prolonged moisture, rough surfaces and high heat
- 💧 Spot-clean only with cool water and mild detergent when necessary
- ❌ Do not wring, soak, iron or tumble-dry
- 📦 Store flat or in a soft pouch to protect the frayed edges
- 🔍 Inspect stitching and embellishments regularly; reinforce if any looseness is found
- ⚠️ Remove during activities where it may catch or pull
- 👶 Small beads and charms are not suitable for unsupervised young children
